Glossary
Registration bots are automated programs that mass-create fake accounts on a service, typically to enable downstream fraud and abuse: promo and bonus abuse, money-mule networks, fraud staging, spam, or stockpiling accounts for later attacks. They target the sign-up flow specifically, turning account creation into a factory for fraudulent identities.
Fake accounts are the raw material for a lot of fraud, and registration bots are how they’re produced at scale. Stopping them at signup prevents a cascade of downstream abuse.
Registration bots automate the signup form at scale, using disposable or generated email addresses and phone numbers, spoofed device fingerprints, residential proxies to appear as many distinct users, and sometimes CAPTCHA-solving services to clear challenges. Because each fake account can look superficially plausible, volume and coordination are the tells: many "different" users sharing subtle device, network, or behavioral similarities.
Defense concentrates at the signup flow: behavioral analysis (form-filling that’s too fast or too uniform to be human), device intelligence (spotting emulators, anti-detect browsers, and repeated devices behind "different" accounts), data validation (flagging disposable emails and phone numbers), and linking analysis (connecting accounts that share devices, IPs, or patterns). Detecting the automation and the coordination early stops the fake accounts before they exist, far cheaper than chasing the downstream fraud they enable. Because registration bots feed new-account fraud and promo abuse, bot detection at onboarding is a high-leverage control.
What are registration bots?
Automated programs that mass-create fake accounts for downstream fraud like promo abuse, mule networks, and spam.
How do registration bots work?
They automate the signup form using disposable emails/phones, spoofed devices, proxies, and CAPTCHA-solving to appear as many distinct users.
How do you stop registration bots?
Behavioral analysis, device intelligence, data validation, and linking analysis at signup to catch automation and coordination early.
