What is B2C identity management?

B2C identity management handles the identities of individual consumers at scale, prioritizing frictionless experience, self-service, and fraud protection.
by Transmit Security

B2C identity management is the discipline of managing the identities of individual consumers, at large scale, with a heavy emphasis on frictionless experience, self-service, privacy, and fraud protection. It is the most common form of customer identity and access management, and its priorities are shaped by the fact that its users are anonymous individuals who will leave the moment things get annoying.

Where B2B identity models organizations, B2C models millions of independent people, each of whom signs up for themselves and expects a fast, personal, secure experience.

What defines B2C identity

Three forces dominate. Scale and volatility: consumer login volume is huge and spikes hard. Experience as a revenue lever: every extra step at signup or login costs conversions, so passwordless and progressive profiling matter. And fraud as a constant: consumer accounts are attacked relentlessly, so fraud detection has to be built in. Consumers also self-manage their data and consent, which puts privacy compliance at the center.

Why it needs a purpose-built approach

Consumer identity breaks the assumptions of workforce IAM (you can’t mandate a consumer’s security posture) and demands capabilities workforce tools lack (consumer-scale fraud detection, frictionless passwordless, self-service at volume). This is why purpose-built CIAM exists, and why B2C is its core case: the front door to millions of consumer relationships, where growth and security have to be served at once.
