What are autonomous (AI-driven) attacks?

Autonomous or AI-driven attacks use AI to plan, adapt, and execute attacks at machine speed and scale.
by Transmit Security

Autonomous (AI-driven) attacks are cyberattacks in which AI plans, adapts, and executes malicious activity with little human direction, operating at machine speed and scale and adjusting tactics in response to defenses. They represent the offensive edge of the same AI wave that is reshaping fraud and identity.

Where a traditional automated attack runs a fixed script, an AI-driven attack can probe, learn, and change approach on the fly, more like a tireless adversary than a loop.

How they work

AI can be turned to every stage of an attack: generating convincing phishing and deepfakes at scale, discovering and exploiting weaknesses, adapting evasion when a defense reacts, and coordinating many actions faster than humans could. Malicious AI agents can be pointed at a target to pursue a goal, and hijacked legitimate agents can be turned against their own users. The result is attacks that are more adaptive, more scalable, and cheaper to run.

Why defenses must be AI-driven

Static defenses cannot keep pace with an adversary that adapts in real time. Countering AI-driven attacks means AI-driven defense: detection that learns and adapts, signal-rich models that catch novel patterns, and removing the fuel these attacks rely on (reusable credentials, stored data, weak verification). Defenders also hold an advantage attackers lack, access to real behavioral and device signals that generated activity struggles to fake. The contest is increasingly AI against AI.

Frequently asked questions

What are autonomous (AI-driven) attacks?

Attacks where AI plans, adapts, and executes malicious activity at machine speed with little human direction.

How do they differ from ordinary automated attacks?

Automated attacks run fixed scripts; AI-driven attacks adapt tactics in real time and can pursue goals autonomously.

How do you defend against them?

With AI-driven, adaptive detection and by removing the fuel (reusable credentials, stored data) these attacks exploit.
