What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is when AI agents shop, buy, and transact on a consumer’s behalf. Learn what it means for identity, payments, and fraud.
by Transmit Security

Agentic commerce is commerce conducted by AI agents acting on a consumer’s behalf, an agent that browses, compares, purchases, and pays for goods or services autonomously within the authority its user grants it. It is an emerging model that reshapes how identity, payments, and fraud work at the point of sale.

Instead of a person clicking "buy," a consumer’s agent completes the purchase. That sounds small, but it changes who (or what) the merchant is actually transacting with.

What changes

When an agent shops and pays, the merchant faces automation that is legitimate and authorized, not a bot to block. Payments must be authorized for an agent within limits the consumer set. Identity has to answer new questions: is this the consumer’s real agent, and is it acting within its mandate? Fraud detection has to distinguish a sanctioned agent from a hijacked or malicious one, since agent-driven transactions can look uniform and move fast.

Why it matters

Agentic commerce is moving from concept toward reality as major platforms enable agents to transact. Businesses that treat every automated purchase as either a human or a bot to block will either lose legitimate agent-driven sales or admit fraud. Preparing means being able to recognize and authorize agents, scope what they may spend, and detect malicious ones, which is why agentic commerce is tightly bound to agent identity, delegated authority, and agentic-fraud defense.
